My my my. . . I’m having a very hard time posting here in EA! I’m thankful for our internet after 1 month without it, but I haven’t been able to upload any videos. Actually it took about 2 days for these 3 pictures to finally upload. Hoping it will get better!! I want this be a source of memories for our family, as well as keeping you guys updated! But I refuse to let it be a source of frustration 🙂 I also am finding that I am exhausted by 7:30pm when we put the kids down (which is preventing any type of posting on here). I don’t know if it’s all the walking (while carrying Caden), or if it’s more mental exhaustion making sure the kids stay safe with all the crazy bikes and scooters on the sidewalks 🙂 I KNOW it’s part language and culture demands that drain us. But just think where we will be as far as that goes in 2 years!! That is exciting for me! Or it could be all the cooking from scratch everything and washing it and putting it away. . . I’m learning a lot, and David has been a HUGE help! I thought I cooked healthy and stayed away from processed or box mixes/cans before. . . but I guess not.  This past week I made homemade tortillas, tortillas chips and salsa. I also went to the market and bought a whole chicken and make chicken stock for soups as it gets cooler. Somehow I successfully told the meat guy at the market that morning to cut off the head and feet and take out the insides (he left the kidneys though?). It was still gross to me though. Colt was super excited about the chicken legs when it was cooked through, and he ate them both after school! Here are some pictures of more “fun food” we saw at an import store 🙂

Rotisserie turtle anyone?? Packaged EXACTLY like the rotisserie chickens in the States 🙂

Squid and other seafoods
Baby Octopus? Yum! Actually I’ve never had it, but my brother and David tried it once in NC 🙂

Caden is a rock star. . .

Everywhere we go, people stop and smile at our littles, especially this sweet little guy.  David always says how the kids have no idea how many people smile because of them around here 🙂 One day I was walking back from the market with Caden in our Ergo (baby carrier), when an older lady almost tackled me trying to get to him!  It scared me at first, but then I realized she just wanted to see and talk to the baby.  Of course, she starts talking to me a mile a minute (and I can’t understand).  Then I tell her I don’t speak Chinese.  And she smiles and says, “ohhhh.”  Then KEEPS RIGHT ON TALKING. This is the story of our lives right now.  It always makes us laugh though.  Maybe, if they keep talking we will understand?  One day ma’am, I shall 🙂

Crazy Driving Here.

This is the road we cross every morning to language class.  We feel like we are playing “chicken” with the buses, taxis, cars, scooters, and bicycles!

Traffic from my taxi window

Caden doesn’t mind that there are no carseats here. . . Mommy tries to avoid taxis for this reason.

Happy baby 🙂

While Caden and I were traveling back from a conference in a taxi, our driver drove IN BETWEEN another taxi and a BUS!! Oh, and there was no extra lane.  We just squeezed through, and I pr@yed. Oh my.  I may avoid these all the more now 🙂

A trip to the market . .

Hope you enjoy the pictures!!

Walking into the local wet market
A great selection of seasonal fruits!
Yummy vegetables – and pumpkins!!
Some of the “wet” part of the market – fish, frogs, turtles, little things that look like eels? Yumm. . .
LOTS of variety with the eggs.  Colt said they have the little brown speckled ones (hard boiled) for snacks at his school and he likes them!
Pig feet anyone?
This is what happens when we stop for any length of time – automatically draw a group of locals around 🙂

Hello from East Asia!!

Whew. . . this blog post has been a looooong time coming! We arrived on October 4th. The plane ride was basically uneventful. I mean. . . as uneventful as a 30 hour trip can be with 3 small kiddos. They DID sleep most of the first flight (which was overnight), but not so much on the second flight. That flight was from London directly to our city, and I think everyone on that flight was Asian except for us and the British flight attendants. Caden was a superstar though, and was passed around half of the plane with everyone loving his blue eyes and light hair. That was a welcome break for me 🙂 When we arrived, our supervisors had our apartment in place with basic furnishings. David went out the next day and set up our cell phones and attempted to set up our internet. Unfortunately, the internet took almost a whole month to get worked out (we just got it 3 days ago). We are thankful to have it though! Now we are looking online for some rugs, decorations, etc. to make our place a bit more warm and “home-y.” We met our neighbor – he is a young guy who actually speaks pretty good English! That has been neat and helpful at times! We look forward to developing a friendship with him and sharing the Good News. Colt started the local kindergarten shortly after we arrived because he was super excited! He is doing great and already picking up some stuff with perfect tones. I can’t help but be so grateful and excited for him! He said he made a friend his very first day, and that he likes his school. He said he would like it more if he could speak Chinese though 🙂 Kylie and Caden stay with our Ayi (“Auntie”) while David and I are in language classes from 9-12:30 each day. Caden has taken to her quite nicely. Kylie is struggling with the communication barrier. Ayi can’t speak any English, and this has been quite frustrating for Kylie I think. We are working on that though 🙂 So far we have really been blessed to love this city, the culture, and the people! It’s different to have to walk everywhere, or use public transportation (like buses/taxis) when we have to. The driving here is craaaazy! Everything seems to take a little longer. We draw a lot of attention everywhere we go with the 3 “white haired” kiddos. Whenever we learn how to speak the language, this will be a great tool though!! So, for that I’m excited! I can’t get the pictures to upload. . . so this will have to do for now.

Family Fun Night at Chick-Fil-A

I think Chick-Fil-A is just top notch when it comes to being a fun and family friendly place to eat! Tuesday they had bounce houses, games, popcorn, cotton candy, and a clown with balloon figures and face painting – whaaat? The kids LOVED it. My dad was holding Kylie, who decided she didn’t really want her face painted. . . so the clown started painting my dad’s face instead. Nice. He then decided not to go to Walmart afterwards (for obvious reasons – ha!).

Sun Flare

When you take a photograph and direct sunlight contacts the many pieces of glass in your lens, it usually creates reflections and flares in your photographs. This is called sun flare and using equipment like the lens hood can take care of this ‘problem’. Then again, sometimes that flare makes your picture look even better – not to mention the handsome little man in the center of the picture 🙂Â
