Another Fun Camp Out!
Colt’s school held a fun little fall campout last Friday for the whole school (the whole school consists of kindergarten through 3rd grade this year and is adding a grade each year as it grows). So I packed up our camping gear, fun costumes for the kiddos, a pumpkin to carve, and some food to share! I noticed I had a bit of a headache after teaching English at Kylie and Caden’s school that morning so I wasn’t feeling the best. As the day went on. . . it only got worse. We ended up at the campsite with the festivities in full swing and me (Haley) in the back with diarrhea and vomiting. Awesome timing. David offered to get me a taxi home (we don’t have a car), but I honestly thought that long ride home would be much worse than just crashing in the tent.
So, all these pics are courtesy of friends and other parents. I was so sad to miss such a fun activity and opportunity to get to know people better. . . but thankfully, I slept well and was better the next morning π

Everyone loved Caden and called him “Super Man!” They especially loved his big white bare belly π – the temperatures are still really warm here by the way!

Each class showed off their costumes. This is Colt’s class – Kylie joined right in too of course (she wouldn’t be left out)!

More singing around the campfire. . . it was a lot of fun. The principal really wanted to stress quality family and friend time.

Not sure what he was playing. . . “Country Roads” was one of the songs though. Can you believe it’s a popular English song here π My little home state – West Virginia! hehe
Gotta love this school!
Fall Camping!
The kids are off school for a week so we decided to enjoy nature for a few days. We found the perfect spot to set up camp – fields for playing (and for grazing water buffalo apparently), mountains for climbing, and a river to swim! We will definitely do it again!

A different Sunday. . .
Yesterday morning, we all headed out the door at bit before 7:00 to catch a taxi to the bus station. At the bus station we caught a bus headed to the countryside and rode about 2 hours, arriving at 9:30. It was an easy ride there with plenty of space (we all had a seat to ourselves), and the kids were gems. We planned to return to the group that David had “stumbled upon” a month or so ago. We let the brother we met with last time know that we were coming, but he was out of town during the national holiday here. We still went though, since the timing was good to go as a family (the kids are off school on holiday too).
We arrived to find about 13 members all in their 70’s or 80’s. There was also only 1 man. They sang, without music, and then a lady led them in reading or speaking. . . I’m not sure which. Β I couldn’t understand much of what they were saying because they were speaking in their local dialect (and I was trying to keep 3 little Miles’ children fairly close to silent). It was sad though for lots of reasons: there was only 1 man; it was led by a woman; no one paid her any attention; there was definitely a lack of zeal and love for the Word; there was no evidence that after this generation that group would continue to meet.
Afterwards, we stayed and had lunch (veggie dish and chicken feet!) and then headed back home. That bus ride was not so pleasant since we were sitting on stools in the aisle, crammed in with quite a number of other travelers. Memory maker for sure.
Next time (now that we know the needs), we hope to go prepared with a message of encouragement and ways to serve the brothers and sisters there.

Recent pics of the kiddos

Colt and his classmates playing at school. There are 7 total in his class (4 girls, 3 boys). Yes, Colt is barefoot. Β His shoes broke at school that day. Β ha!Β

Colt learned this cool knot at school. I gave him a whole spool of yarn and he “knotted” the whole thing. So proud of him!

A common gathering area in our apartment complex. There is no shortage of playmates to be found here! One of the things I really love about our new home π

Colt and our neighbor. They have become really close friends. They played together daily over the summer. This friend lives at his school from Monday-Friday (this is not uncommon for kids to live at school during the week, and it’s not the same school at Colt goes to by the way) . So now they can only play together on the weekends. Colt is glad he doesn’t have to live at his school!
Mid Autumn Festival and Moon Cakes
Fall time has arrived, and it is wonderful! The air is cool and crisp (and dry! woohoo!), and the sun is shining bright every day. I love it and wish it could stay this way forever π According to the Chinese lunar calendar the middle of Autumn is next weekend and the moon will be full and bright! For this holiday everyone makes, buys, and shares moon cakes. Colt made some during their cooking class yesterday at school, and we enjoyed them this morning. They were a tad sweet and chewy, with a filling of peanuts, sesame seeds, dates, and I’m not sure what else π
The history of this festival comes from 2 different origins depending on who you ask and what era. In the ancient dynasties it started from worship of the sun in the spring and moon in the fall. Then later, a love story was written where the girl drank an elixer that caused her to become a celestial being who lived on the moon.
People in different places follow various customs, but all show their love and longing for a better life. So, during the Mid Autumn Festival people will enjoy the full moon and eat moon cakes!
Soccer season!
Colt gets to do soccer lessons on Tuesdays after school. They practice for about 45 minutes, then scrimmage for 45 minutes. He has come a long way from when he first started last year. This year he’s going after the ball and giving it his all. I was amazed at the change from the timid boy on the field last year π Thankful that he’s healthy, happy, and having fun!

Picnic on the Riverbank
David bought an inflatable boat, and the kids have been waiting to use it. So, we picked them up after school, took a picnic dinner, and paddled down the river a bit. Then we found a good spot to eat and play. It was pretty fun! So thankful for quality family times and living in a place where we can do things like this!
