Mid Autumn Festival and Moon Cakes

Fall time has arrived, and it is wonderful! The air is cool and crisp (and dry! woohoo!), and the sun is shining bright every day. I love it and wish it could stay this way forever :) According to the Chinese lunar calendar the middle of Autumn is next weekend and the moon will be full and bright! For this holiday everyone makes, buys, and shares moon cakes. Colt made some during their cooking class yesterday at school, and we enjoyed them this morning. They were a tad sweet and chewy, with a filling of peanuts, sesame seeds, dates, and I’m not sure what else :)

The history of this festival comes from 2 different origins depending on who you ask and what era. In the ancient dynasties it started from worship of the sun in the spring and moon in the fall. Then later, a love story was written where the girl drank an elixer that caused her to become a celestial being who lived on the moon.

People in different places follow various customs, but all show their love and longing for a better life. So, during the Mid Autumn Festival people will enjoy the full moon and eat moon cakes!

  1. Glad to hear there is a break in the rain! The moon cakes look good (fancier than the moon pies we have in WV). You all are a special blessing. Much love.

  2. Love the pics……I noticed the young boy in the background scratching his head…hmm….wondering maybe if there is room for him :)

  3. Oooooh those little cakes looked so good!!! Give our love to those sweet “greats”.. Looks like they are having a
    Fun time during their recess!!!
