Kylie Joy turned 4!

Oh this girl. . . she keeps us on our toes!! We were looking back through pics and I cannot believe how much she has grown and changed over the past 4 years! She LOVES music, singing, and dancing. She’s a natural. She is fluent in Chinese. . . probably the best language out of our fam currently. She loves pink, accessories, dresses and everything “beautiful.” She’s pretty funny and very outspoken. We get nervous sometimes wondering what she might say next! She’s terribly afraid of any animal, but her older brother has helped her overcome her fear of frogs and turtles. Now she can catch them like the best of ’em!

Duan Wu Jie (Dragon Boat Festival)

It’s Duan Wu Jie here! There are several stories behind this holiday, but the best known legend is about a famous Chinese poet named Qu Yuan. Despite his love and passion for his country, he was exiled. Qu Yuan in great despair committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River (Yunan Province) on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month (lunar calendar – May 5th).

The rest is legend… When they heard of Qu Yuan’s death, the local people were very sad, and rowed out on the river to search for his body, but were unable to find him. To preserve his body, the locals paddled their boats up and down the river, hitting the water with their paddles and beating drums to scare evil spirits away. They threw lumps of rice into the river to feed the fish, so that they would not eat Qu Yuan’s body. Pretty superstitious huh? I think for most people now it’s just a story, but it has become tradition to race dragon boats (long boats witha dragon head at the front) and eat zongzi (balls of really sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves).

The was no dragon boat racing in our city, I thought that would’ve been really cool to see! They said they are mostly in the countryside 🙁 But, our neighbor did bring us some zongzi to eat, and I must say they were the best I’ve ever eaten since being here! The kids are off school on Monday for the holiday, and we plan to go with our neighbor to the countryside. Should be fun! Will post pics next week!

Yangshuo

We met a Dutch family who also has a son at Colt’s school. He is about 8 years old, but they have become little buddies 🙂 The Dutch family opened a bed and breakfast in a nearby tourist spot called Yangshuo. It’s about 2 hours total travel from our house. They asked if we would mind picking their boys up from school one Friday and bringing them up to Yangshuo, offering to host us for the weekend. It was beautiful and a lot of fun!

Update from last post. . .

Just a few days ago, the Father really placed our former Ayi and her husband’s situation on my heart and mind.  I wrote a post about them, their difficult circumstances, and asked you to PR with us for them!  For the right donor to be found and to be found quickly!  The donor was found today!! You can read more about it here.  I will post more as events unfold! So thankful and excited!
